Applications for the Palladium Global Science Award are now Open

The first annual Palladium Global Science Award competition is now live, with a total prize fund of $350,000. Scientists, startups and research groups involved in the study, analysis and development of new applications for palladium have to submit their entries until 31 July 2025. The China Precious Metals Industry Committee (CPMIC) is the main partner of the competition.

The basalt fiber industry may drive growth in platinum consumption

On March 25, 2025, Alar City, Xinjiang held a high-quality development conference on basalt fiber industry, with nearly 500 representatives from government, industry, academia, and research reaching a consensus on the path of industrial upgrading. The meeting pointed out that the breakthrough in platinum-rhodium alloy leak plate technology (withstanding temperatures of 1600℃ and increasing the yield by over 30%) and the application of the new generation of 8000-hole large leak plates (increasing the platinum consumption per line to over 10 kg) have become the core of improving quality and efficiency. The China Association of Materials Recycling will reduce the annual platinum loss cost through full-chain services. The explosive demand for basalt fiber in emerging fields such as new energy vehicle battery casings and deep-sea corrosion protection may make platinum group metals a new growth point for industrial applications. The Alar base is building a full industrial chain collaborative system of "ore selection-melting and drawing-deep processing", accelerating the transformation of scientific research achievements, promoting green upgrading and cost reduction and efficiency increase through technological innovation, and contributing to the national dual-carbon goals and the construction of a new type of industrialization.
