Often called the "chip" of the chemical industry, catalysts dictate the ceiling of downstream sectors. For years, the high-end catalyst market was dominated by foreign giants, whose high costs and technological strangleholds posed major risks to China's industrial security. That story is now being rewritten by Canan New Materials (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd., a distinguished member of our association, driven by 18 years of unwavering commitment and innovation.
On March 30, CCTV’s Artisan Spirit aired a special feature on Dr. Wang Dingjun, Chairman of Canan, telling a national audience how this national-level "little giant" specializing in high-end catalysts broke the foreign monopoly and achieved import substitution for nearly 2,000 catalyst products.
Back in 2008, facing technological containment from multinational corporations, Dr. Wang and his team threw themselves into R&D with relentless determination. Within eight months, they turned profitable and quickly built an in-house R&D system with proprietary intellectual property. From spinosad to hydrogen chloride-to-chlorine processes, Canan has continuously tackled technical bottlenecks, filling multiple domestic technology gaps. Crucially, it reduced the cost of key spinosad catalysts to one-fifth or even one-tenth of international levels, delivering game-changing cost reductions for downstream industries.
Behind these breakthroughs lies Canan’s unique "three-tier" R&D system, which bridges the "last mile" from lab to industrial production, delivering technology transfer cycles far faster than the industry average. Driven by customer needs, Canan’s catalytic technologies now serve a wide range of fields, including industrial emission control, indoor formaldehyde removal, and food safety—truly putting R&D into practice.
Among its product portfolio, room-temperature air purification catalysts stand out as a key pillar. Canan’s room-temperature formaldehyde removal catalysts provide efficient, long-lasting performance. They have, for the first time globally, solved the challenge of air purification for motor vehicles and vessels, offering a cost-effective "China Core" for the transportation sector.
As a member of the China Precious Metals Industry Committee (CPMIC), Canan’s achievements are not only a testament to the company’s own strength but also a vivid example of China’s new materials industry moving toward self-sufficiency. The import substitution of nearly 2,000 catalyst products frees downstream companies from the pricing power and delivery schedules of overseas suppliers. The sharp drop in catalyst costs directly strengthens the global competitiveness of Chinese manufacturing. In the documentary, Dr. Wang revealed the philosophy behind his work: "Catalysts speed up reactions without being consumed. That mirrors our commitment to industry—empowering the times and enabling others." In areas critical to people’s livelihoods—air purification, chemical synthesis, environmental protection—Canan’s technologies quietly underpin the security and resilience of industrial chains.
