At the recently concluded 2026 Precious Metals Industry Work Conference, Mr. Bian Jiang, person-in-charge of the China Precious Metals Industry Committee (CPMIC), officially released the 2025 China Industrial Precious Metals Recycling Data Report  on behalf of the Committee, conducting an all-round review of the development performance of the precious metals industry in the preceding year.

According to the report, China’s platinum group metals supply stood at 227.7 tonnes and demand at 180 tonnes in 2025, translating to a supply surplus of 47.7 tonnes. In 2025, platinum consumption registered notable growth in investment and jewelry sectors, and consumption demand for platinum in the glass fiber industry is set to pick up further in 2026. In parallel, palladium consumption is poised to achieve substantial growth across the chemical and electronic industries.

The estimated recycled volumes of major precious metals in 2025 are specified as follows: gold 165 tonnes, silver 6,100 tonnes, platinum 18.7 tonnes, palladium 31.5 tonnes, rhodium 3 tonnes, ruthenium 2.7 tonnes and iridium 1 tonne. Given the extremely low consumption and recyclable quantity of osmium, this metal is not included in the statistical scope. The total recycled volume of platinum group metals is projected to hit 56.9 tonnes, representing a year-on-year increase of 45.5%.

At the subsequent roundtable forum, participating experts held positive views on the development potential of artificial intelligence as well as the driving effect of new energy development strategies on the precious metals sector. They projected that platinum and palladium consumption would edge down slightly year on year, whereas market demand for iridium, rhodium and ruthenium will maintain a sustained upward trend.
