Recently, China’s first large‑scale production line for processing platinum‑group metals from carbonyl tailings was officially commissioned at Jinchuan Group Tonggui Co., Ltd., a member entity of our association. Breaking the industrial bottleneck in the efficient recovery of secondary resources, this production line marks a new milestone in the recycling of scarce platinum‑group metal resources in China and provides solid technical support for national strategic resource security and green low‑carbon development.

Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Jinchang, Gansu Province, Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd. is a mega integrated enterprise under the control of the People’s Government of Gansu Province, integrating mining, mineral processing, smelting, chemical engineering and deep‑processing operations. It hosts the world’s third‑largest copper‑nickel sulfide deposit and serves as China’s production base for nickel and cobalt, refining hub for platinum‑group metals, as well as northern China’s largest copper producer. Its major products include nickel, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum‑group precious metals, advanced non‑ferrous metal materials and chemical products, which are widely applied in construction, machinery, petrochemicals, new‑energy and battery manufacturing, biomedical sectors and other segments of the national economy.

Given the complex composition of carbonyl tailings and stringent requirements for process control accuracy, Jinchuan Group Information and Automation Engineering Co., Ltd. has developed a tailor‑made integrated solution featuring “precision equipment adaptation, intelligent system integration and closed‑loop safety management and control”. Leveraging the DCS system to integrate on‑site equipment and developing dedicated control programmes, the company has successfully addressed two major challenges of process control and communication linkage.

Platinum‑group metals are known as “the vitamin of modern industry”, extensively used in automobile manufacturing, new energy, fine chemicals, medical care, electronics and other fields. China ranks among the world’s largest consumers and importers of platinum‑group metals, and has long suffered from insufficient domestic supply. Recycling is a critical pathway to offset resource gaps and safeguard supply‑chain security. According to forecasts by CPMIC, China’s recovered volume of platinum‑group metals from industry and automobile sectors will reach 70 tonnes by 2027, and the country’s self‑sufficiency rate for platinum‑group metals is expected to rise to 45 %. The commissioning of this production line will significantly boost China’s self‑supply capacity for platinum‑group metals.

The successful operation of the production line sets a new benchmark for Jinchuan Group in the comprehensive utilisation of precious‑metal resources. It also delivers strong support for the green circular development of China’s platinum‑group metal industry and the guarantee of national strategic resource security.
