A new model for the recycling of discarded renewable resources in the mobile internet age has been unveiled in Beijing.
In several districts of Beijing, local residents use a smartphone to download and install an app called "Relive." Clicking the "Recycling" button in the menu brings up the "Summon Recycling Hero" button. Clicking this button sends a series of instructions, and uniformly dressed "Recycling Heroes" will come to collect recyclable waste according to the user's specified "most convenient time" and "service cycle."
These uniformly dressed "Recycling Heroes" drive small vehicles with the words "On-site Waste Recycling, Daily Necessities Delivery" printed on them, regularly collecting recyclable waste, including plastic bottles, aluminum cans, paper, packaging bags, old clothes, and electronic waste such as old mobile phones, computers, and monitors.
Connecting "ordinary citizens" and "Recycling Heroes" is "Relive," China's first mobile internet-based app. It collects nearly 10 tons of recyclable waste daily and provides "regular waste recycling" and "periodic home delivery of daily necessities" services.
Xia Fan, general manager of Relive (Beijing) Information Technology Co., Ltd., positions "Relive" as a recycled resource recovery operator and a household periodic service provider.
"Waste money" is automatically credited to the user's app account, which can be used to purchase household daily necessities online at convenience stores. The "Recycling Hero" will deliver the ordered goods free of charge on their next visit and collect newly generated waste.
Waste sorting has been implemented in China for over 10 years, but the results are still not ideal. However, the "Relive" app, which has only been online for half a year, has already covered nearly 300 communities in Beijing.
The pain points of inconvenience felt by the people are always the first to be transformed by the internet. This is what the "Relive" team believes in.
"Everyone has a good heart to participate in environmental protection, but if waste sorting is too troublesome, it will weaken the development and enthusiasm of waste sorting habits; 'Relive' tries to lower the threshold for users to participate in waste sorting and recycled resource utilization, so the O2O recycling model based on internet technology has been recognized." said Xia Fan.
The core members of the "Relive" entrepreneurial team previously worked in banks, have more than 10 years of financial background, understand mobile internet technology, and at the same time pay attention to and practice environmental protection in life, deeply feeling that the "time is right" for the combination point. In the early stages of their business, they spent several months "mingling" with the ranks of waste pickers, gaining deep experience and forming their own "business acumen":
The solid waste disposal industry chain is very long. Most traditional recycling companies focus their main efforts on the back-end "sorting and processing," while the front-end facing the public mainly relies on individual itinerant merchants "scattered" collecting scrap, resulting in unstable waste sources, inconsistent quality, multiple recycling and resale links, and uneconomical processing and utilization.
"In the new era emphasizing experience economy, new business models and standardized services can significantly improve user convenience and accelerate the process and efficiency of the waste recycling industry in achieving economies of scale." said Xia Fan.
In March this year, the General Office of the Ministry of Commerce issued the "2015 Key Points of Work for the Development of the Circulation Industry," proposing to "promote the development of green circulation," organizing and implementing the "Medium and Long-Term Plan for the Construction of a Recycled Resource Recovery System," and promoting the coordinated development of the recycled resource recovery system and the domestic waste collection system.
With the support of government policies, "Relive" gained the recognition and support of many community committees and property management companies from the beginning of its business promotion.
Based on the O2O service model and the environmental protection concept of reuse, the footprints of "Recycling Heroes" have gradually expanded from the initial Fangzhuang area of Fengtai District to eight areas including Panjiayuan, Liujiayao, Xiluoyuan, Malian Dao, Jiaomen, and Lugu, and will continue to expand.
In more than half a year since the launch of the service, Beijing's "Recycling Heroes" have collected 1.2 million plastic bottles and more than 400 tons of cardboard boxes. With a paper utilization rate of 80%, each ton of cardboard boxes corresponds to about 17 trees, equivalent to saving 6,000 trees through recycling.
"As a start-up company, 'Relive' starts from small steps, promoting waste sorting and emission reduction and the utilization of recycled resources, and the circular economy of turning waste into treasure also requires every citizen to take a firm small step." said Xia Fan.
