Apple announces new environmental project in China: Emphasis on renewable energy

Apple states that its goal is to achieve zero impact on the global supply of sustainable virgin fiber and to use 100% renewable energy in all its facilities worldwide.

Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environmental affairs, said: "Like energy, forests can be a renewable resource. We believe we can operate on nature's renewable resources, ensuring that we protect and cultivate more sustainable ecological forests, striving for their output to equal the paper used to make our product packaging."

Lu Sicheng, director general of WWF China, said: "The main purpose of our cooperation is to produce more timber in responsibly managed forests. This is essential for China, the world's largest importer of timber. We hope this will catalyze a new model of cooperation, spreading the concept of sustainable forest management and the efficient and responsible use of paper resources to the world."

Three weeks ago, Apple established its first solar power project in Sichuan, China. This project produces far more clean energy than is needed for all of Apple's offices and retail stores in China. In this project, Apple collaborated with several companies to build two 20-megawatt solar farms. The project will produce 80 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, enough to power approximately 61,000 Chinese households. This clean energy will be fed into the power grid.

“We are setting an example by using clean energy for our data centers, retail stores, and offices, and we are ready to lead the way in reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “This cannot be achieved overnight; it will actually take years of effort, but it is an important task that must be done, and Apple is willing to take the lead in achieving this ambitious goal. This is our responsibility. We are pleased to work with leaders in our supply chain who are willing to be at the forefront of China's green transformation.”
