There is no dust in the air, no noise, no tall chimneys. Entering the Guixi Copper Industry Circular Economy Base Disassembly and Processing Zone, in these neat factory buildings, hundreds of thousands of tons of discarded electromechanical products are "digested" each year and transformed into recycled copper, providing low-consumption, low-emission, and high-efficiency resource security for Jiangtong Group and more than 70 other copper smelting enterprises. Last year, the base was officially approved as a national "urban mine" demonstration base.

Guixi was established as a city because of copper. Currently, it has more than 70 copper smelting and processing enterprises. Among them, Jiangtong Group produces 1 million tons of electrolytic copper annually, requiring the import of more than 700,000 tons of copper raw materials each year, resulting in significant resource pressure. To break through the bottleneck of copper raw material demand and copper resource scarcity, the city innovated its development approach, utilizing domestic and foreign waste and scrap copper resources to create the first centralized disassembly and utilization processing park for discarded electromechanical products approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection to be established inland. It is figuratively known as an "urban mine".

In the eyes of the people of Guixi, the discarded electromechanical, hardware, electrical appliances, wires, and cables are valuable minerals. With the approval of the import of seventh-category waste via the "Shanghai- Jiujiang-Yugan" water-land combined transport and the "Ningbo-Yugan" sea-rail combined transport customs clearance, containers filled with scrap metal continuously flow into the Guixi "waterless port" every day, then transported via the logistics platform to 24 disassembly enterprises in the disassembly and processing zone; the processed "crude copper" is continuously transported to more than 70 copper processing enterprises in Guixi, processed into more than 100 types of copper products. Last year, the base paid 313 million yuan in taxes and achieved a main business income of 22.302 billion yuan.

It is understood that after the completion of the copper circular economy base, an annual disassembly capacity of 1.8 million tons can be formed, providing 450,000 tons of recycled copper annually for Jiangtong Group and local copper enterprises. Compared with using copper ore, for every 10,000 tons of recycled copper used by enterprises, it means that 1.2 to 1.5 million tons of tailings can be reduced, 40,000 to 60,000 tons of smelting waste slag can be reduced, 3,600 tons of sulfur can be reduced, energy equivalent to 59,000 tons of standard coal can be saved, and production costs can be reduced by more than 6 million yuan. The environmental and energy-saving benefits are extremely significant.

To ensure that the "urban mine" produces green wealth, Guixi City regards environmental protection as a prerequisite for the development of the copper recycling industry. All enterprises in the disassembly and processing zone implement clean production, are not allowed to emit waste gas, and all wastewater is collected in the wastewater treatment plant in the park. Most solid waste is reused, and hazardous waste that cannot be reused is regularly transported to the solid waste treatment center identified by the provincial environmental protection department for centralized disposal.
