Professor Kyriaki Polychronopoulou
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Center for Catalysis and Separation at Khalifa University
Kyriaki Polychronopoulou, Greek, is currently a full-time professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Khalifa University and a visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
She is also the founding director of the KU Center for Catalysis and Separation (CeCaS), the first center of its kind in the UAE. CeCaS actively supports the UAE's vision for alternative fuels (hydrogen, biofuels) and decarbonization through the conversion of carbon dioxide into useful fuels and the mining of hydrocarbons.
Dr. Polychronopoulou's research focuses on experimental and computational catalysis from both fundamental and applied perspectives, revealing reaction mechanisms and understanding surface phenomena and their relationship with the microstructure of catalytic materials. The main processes of concern include: hydrogen (H2) production, carbon dioxide conversion, and biofuel production. She holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Cyprus (2005).
She received the Khalifa University Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2018 and the Abu Dhabi Education and Knowledge Department (ADEK) Award for Excellence in Research for three consecutive rounds in 2019, 2017, and 2015. Khalifa University Outstanding Research Faculty Excellence Award in 2015, the US Fulbright Senior Research Award in 2007, and the British Council Research Award in 2008.
Research Areas:
1. Catalysis Science and Technology: Exploring the design and preparation of novel catalysts, especially in the application of environmentally friendly catalysis and energy conversion catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis (H2, CO2, NH3, biofuels)
2. Novel Energy Materials: Such as lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells, etc., to improve the efficiency of energy storage and conversion.
